“You dial my number/So let me take the lead/I'm the man,
understand/With the smooth slight of hand/And all the magic you need.”
Name: Gabriel Wolfe
Nicknames: None
Age: 25
Species: Human
Family: mother alive in New York City
Soulmate: Kaitlyn Fairchild
Close Friends: Kait, Anna Whiteraven, Lewis Chao
Circle: Daybreak
Residence: San Francisco
Appearance: When Kaitlyn Fairchild first saw Gabriel the word she used
to describe him was Chiaroscuro. An art word meaning light and shade.
Very fitting for Gabriel, who on first seeing him what you do notice
is the stark contrast in his skin tone and hair and eye colour. Both
Gabriel's hair and eyes are a very very dark brown, so dark its almost
black. His skin tone on the other hand, is very very pale, almost
white like snow. He's not that tall in height, standing at just under
six foot, with a lithe frame. His beauty is almost statue like, and
kind of cold, but Gabriel keeps a certain smile where those who know
him well can see that he's not all ice.
Personality: Gabriel built up strong walls earlier in his life and is
still finding it hard to let them down. He has learned in more recent
times that its okay to have friends and accept that there are people
who care about him. He has a very dry sense of humour and tends to
inject sarcastic wit, usually when inappropriate. To those few Gabriel
has warmed up enough to trust and consider as friends he will defend
and fight for. It takes a lot of effort to get through his walls and
Gabriel knows that, and still sometimes deliberately makes it hard for
people to even want to get through.
Strengths: Gabriel is a little more than just a human. He is a
psychic. His power is telepathy. He is able to connect to another
person's mind. The easiest way to do so is through communication,
talking directly mind to mind without having to actually speak out
loud. With this ability he connected the minds of the other students
at the Zetes Institute, Rob, Kait, Anna, Lewis and himself all in a
five point psychic web, the strongest of its kind. Gabriel is also
very resourceful, he knows how to live on the bare minimum, and can
survive through a lot. He's also quite cunning, and not afraid to do
what it takes to get the job done, even if that does mean lie and
cheat.
Weaknesses: His one main weakness is Kaitlyn. She's the love of his
life and he would do anything for her. And anyone who knows him knows
that. He's also still finding it hard to let go of his walls. His
acceptance of help is only from certain people and he's usually moody
and pissy that he has to accept it at all. He's also still more than a
little arrogant and cocky, and his attitude still makes it a little
hard for people to trust him, you're never really quite sure what side
he's on, and something about him still says that he might turn on you.
Gabriel still has a problem with authority figures and taking orders
from them. He's usually the one who can find a flaw with their plans
or logic.
History
Gabriel's life started off as pretty mundane. He lived in New York
City with his parents, his father was a drunk, but he got on well with
his mother who would treat him when ever she could, even if it was
just little things like ice-cream in the summer. Gabriel had dreams of
being a musician in band when he was fourteen. During a session he was
jamming with the drummer when the next thing he knew, he had somehow
managed to drain the guy's mind of energy. The guy was clutching his
head and screaming, lying on the floor, too afraid of Gabriel to
accept his help.
After the incident his mother, his principal and a social worker took
him to a psychic research centre in Durham where they discovered his
power of telepathy. The idea was that the people at the research
centre would try and help him control his gift. At the research centre
he was dubbed a psychic vampire. When he connected with a weaker mind
he drained it of its energy. And it made people afraid of him. It was
at that research centre that Gabriel fell in love for the first time
with a girl named Iris. When they were together his mind connected to
hers - but Iris's mind was a weak one and unintentionally Gabriel
drained her dry, to the point of death. The people in the research
centre thought he was had done it on purpose, that he had killed her.
It was at that research centre as well that Gabriel made the
(unwanted) acquaintance of Rob Kessler, another psychic, a boy with
the ability to heal through energy. Gabriel despised Rob, for Rob was
everything he wasn't - the golden boy who was loved and worshipped by
everyone. It was Rob who was figured out what had happened. Angry,
confused and frightened Gabriel escaped and fled from the research
centre, learning to live by his own means.
He was found again - in a jail in California. He had drained another
mind in self defence - over five dollars he had in his back pocket.
The judge had not seen self defence though. Gabriel was saved from
lock up by the Zetes Institute, another psychic research centre who
offered a very generous scholarship for his co operation. Gabriel
decided he might as well, since with that kind of money, once he was
done, he could do pretty much anything he wanted. His parole allowed
him to attend high school, but otherwise he was confined to the
Institute. Fair enough. Better than nothing. Except for one thing.
Golden boy Kessler was at the Institute too. A long with a bunch of
others. Including a firey girl with red hair and witch eyes who both
fascinated and irritated the hell out him at the same time. He thought
she could be a good distraction. He kept finding himself alone with
her. First off saving her from a strange attacker in oddly coloured
robes. Second she kept coming to his room, trying to get into his
mind. It annoyed him to no end, so he went on the offensive with her,
playing with her, toying with her. Intruding and scaring her at the
same time.
When the others thought there was something off about the Institute he
only went along with it because Kait asked him to. All he had to was
stand guard. He told himself he didn't care. Didn't. But when he saw
something that could put Kait in danger he sent out a warning to
everyone only he knew how to do. With his mind. Inadvertently
connecting the group in a psychic web. As if that wasn't bad enough,
the group's dreams were effected too. They were sharing them. Kait had
discovered there was definitely something off about the Institute and
the psychics were being trained for use as psychic weapons. As if he
knew of Gabriel's discontent, Mr Zetes cornered him, speaking to his
desire for being something better, someone more powerful, but as they
were talking Kaitlyn interrupted. She'd heard and was trying to get on
board as well. Gabriel didn't buy it, but Mr Zetes seemed to. Mr Zetes
took them both back to his home in San Francisco, where he offered
them the "right training" showing them to a very white lab with a very
hideous crystal inside, a lump with growths of smaller crystals
popping out of it at all angles. Mr Zetes told them of his plans.
Kaitlyn wasn't happy and freaked out. She revealed the psychic web and
Mr Z was livid. The group in a web were useless, or so he said. Mr Z
wanted Gabriel to get rid of her. Kill her. But Gabriel - couldn't. Mr
Z was furious. And tried to kill them by hooking Gabriel to his horrid
crystal. Through the web they were rescued by Rob and the others and
fled from the Institute, deciding to chase their shared dream.
During the trip, none of them realised the contact with the crystal
had had a very very bad effect on Gabriel. It had turned him into a
psychic vampire. He needed life energy to stay alive. At first he
dealt with it by finding strays and weaker people who were available.
Until Kaitlyn caught him. And offered him her own life energy. Kait
had saved him. And it was during their energy transfers Gabriel
realised he was in love with her. She was the only one of the group
who wasn't turned off by him. He saw her as his equal. But eventually
realised she did not feel the same way. After all, she was with that
idiot Kessler. Psychic attacks didn't help, and Gabriel was growing
tired and irritated with the whole thing. Made worse when they found
their destination, Whiffen's Spit in Vancouver and the Fellowship of
the Crystal, a pure crystal, unlike Mr Z's monstrosity. However, the
idiot Fellowship were completely passive and operated under a non
violent philosophy. They wouldn't let him into their main building.
Gabriel was disgusted by this, hating to be judged. During their trip
they had made the acquaintance of Lydia, a girl who appeared on the
road when they needed a ride. It turned out she was Mr Z's daughter.
The time spent with the Fellowship, though brief, made Gabriel think.
There was no way he was staying with these freaks to live on the
outside. He would do better off with Mr Z and the other psychics. So
with Lydia's help he was able to pass on information about Kait and
the other's whereabouts, so Mr Z and some other psychics, the psychics
from the failed Pilot study, could destroy the pure crystal. Before
the attack happened, Gabriel left with Lydia and returned to the
Institute.
A few days later he caught up with Kait and the others after a weapon
they had - the last remaining shard of the pure crystal. Which he
didn't get. He ended up in a fight with Kessler. The next thing
Gabriel knew, he sensed through the web an attack on Kaitlyn. She was
back, and wanted in with the Institute. He wasn't sure he believed it,
but she was adamant she'd had enough of the others and wanted to be
with him. At first Gabriel was smug and pleased. Kaitlyn was settling
into the Institute again, even with the other nutty psychics from the
pilot study who were now occupying the house. He soon figured out she
was a spy, disgusted, but unsurprised, and a little hurt too. He
shrugged those feelings off by ignoring her.
Until Mr Z and the others found out what Kaitlyn was up to. They put
Kaitlyn in an isolation chamber in an attempt to destroy her. But
Gabriel could not let that happen. Through the web he called to Kait,
showed her his memories, desperate to save her from a fate worse than
death. He couldn't let her be destroyed. He couldn't deny it any more,
he was as much in love with her now, as he had been when she was
giving her life energy to sustain him. When he returned with Mr Z and
the bad psychics to the Institute to remove Kait from the isolation
chamber - the attack had failed. Kaitlyn had called the others through
the web, but it was Gabriel who took it on himself to destroy Mr Zetes
crystal once and for all, finally proving himself to her and the
others. Kaitlyn at last could no longer deny him. Finally, they were
together and she loved him as much as he loved her.
After the crystal was destroyed, thankfully Gabriel was no longer
influenced by it and no longer a psychic vampire. He was still a
telepath, but there were no nasty consequences to his gift anymore. He
remained with Kaitlyn, even went to college when she did, and to
Circle Daybreak with her. He wasn't overly thrilled with the
Daybreakers, but found he was good at under cover spy work. And as
long as he has Kait by his side, he knows there is nothing he can't
do.
