“She didn't know who reached first, but they were holding each other. And Mary-Lynette was thinking about hunters and danger and laughing at death. About all the things that it meant to really belong to the night. And about how she would never look in the mirror and see the same person she used to be”

Appearance: Mary-Lynnette is an attractive girl, slender with a lovely willowy frame. She's not particularly tall, and stands at 5'3. She has petite features, lovely soft blue eyes, a somewhat sharp nose and sculpted full lips. Her skin tone is a healthy tanned peach with blushes of pink. Her hair is a glossy dark brown, cut short and in a curtains style, falling on either side of her head to just above her shoulders.
Personality: Mary-Lynette is a feisty girl who will always stand up and defend those who can't fight for themselves. She's friendly and open minded, and usually pretty easy to get along with. She's particularly protective of her best friends, and especially her little brother, who she finds hard to realise he's growing up and won't need his big sister to check on him all the time. She's somewhat head strong, and tends to go into things without thinking when she thinks something suspicious is going on, Mare will go striding out to find what's happening with little regard as to what might happen to herself. She does have a bit of a temper when the wrong buttons are pressed.
Strengths: Mary-Lynnette is a fighter, she won't give up no matter how bad things seem. She's also an expert astronomer. She loves the night sky and is striving to learn everything she can about the sky to be an astronomer and discover a star or supernova or comet of her own. Mare is pretty brainy and resourceful, she can think of uses for things that might not be so obvious. Since learning about the night world, she has taken to learning karate and has worked her way up to a brown belt.
Weaknesses: Mary-Lynette is human, therefore vulnerable to so much more than her Night World friends. She tries to make up for this by over compensating with her bravery, acting tough to hide her fear. She gets irritated when she's reminded she's just human and shouldn't be doing something. It makes her do stupid things just to prove she can do important things like the Night People can too.

History

Mary-Lynnette grew up in a small town called Briar Creek, that wasn't particularly exciting. Her mother died when she was a young teenager, leaving her with her brother Mark to look after. Mary-Lynnette took that very seriously, her father's new wife Claudine was nice enough, but not really up to the job of mother hood. Mary-Lynnette's passion was astronomy, and she would spend nights and nights looking at the sky in her proudest possession, her second hand telescope. During day light hours, she often helped out her elderly old neighbour on her farm with her goats. When she was seventeen, Mrs Burke, the elderly neighbour, informed Mare her nieces were coming to visit her. She was curious to find out who the girls were, but one night whilst star gazing, looking with her binoculars she spotted a most disturbing sights. Three girls in Mrs Burke's back yard digging. She was shocked, tried to dismiss it but couldn't. She went over to try to talk to Mrs Burke, thinking that if she saw Mrs Burke everything would be okay.
It wasn't. She met the eldest of the nieces Rowan, they engaged in small talk and Mare asked about Mrs Burke, Rowan's answer was hesitant, confirming all Mare needed to tell her that something was wrong. She couldn't quite convince Mark of her suspicions. The following morning she woke to find a visitor talking to her step mother Claudine, a very good looking, tall but lanky boy to whom she took an instant disliking. He was arrogant, and dismissive, and apparently the brother of Mrs B's nieces. Something strange happened when they touched, something almost like an electric shock. He didn't like her any more than she liked him - leading her to kick him in the shins to get rid of him. That night she planned to go spy on Mrs B's nieces to find out what was buried in the back yard, only to run into the boy, Ash again. She distracted him by making him look at stars in hope he wouldn't discover the shovel she was hiding. Unfortunately to be struck again by that strange electric shock sensation, which made them both want to run as far as they could from each other. Mary-Lynette headed off to Mrs B's back yard and hid in the goat shed, only to be found by her brother Mark, who tried to convince her to leave.
Only when the three nieces came out, Mary-Lynnette convinced him her suspicions were right when they dug up a big object covered in garbage bags. Mrs B. Mary-Lynnette and her brother followed the girls into the woods, where they watched the sisters hunting a deer, feeding on it. Mark had become infatuated with the youngest girl, Jade, and called out to find what she was doing, giving away their hiding spot. Mary-Lynette and Mark entered into a Blood Tie with Rowan, Kestrel and Jade to bind their families together so the vampire girls wouldn't have to kill the humans. It was then they learned of the Night World. Mary-Lynnette was told about the black flowers which allowed Night People to identify themselves to others of their kind, black flowers, and realised she knew someone who wore a Black Flower ring. Her friend Jeremy, who worked at the gas station had a flower that identified him as werewolf. During their talking, they were alerted by a knock on the door which they opened to discover a dead goat covered in toothpicks. And worse, the arrival of Ash, the older brother and the person Mary-Lynnette liked least. A truce was called between the group to discover who had killed the goat - killed in a way the Night World Elders once killed an Uncle of the Redfern sisters and Ash, for telling a human about the Night World.
They discover also, that the strange feelings Ash and Mary-Lynnette were discovering, was an ancient thing in the night world known as the soulmate connection. The one person meant for you in the whole world. Neither were thrilled about it. They fought constantly, and eventually Mare (much to her chagrin) began to understand Ash and the soulmate connection.
The killer of the goat turned out to be her friend Jeremy, who kidnapped her, after seeing her with Ash and the sisters, wanting to make her like him - a werewolf. It was Ash who saved her. The two realised that their soulmate connection could not be denied, but neither were quite ready for it yet. Ash had a lot of growing up to do. He fixed it with the Night World people (through semi lies) so the sisters could stay in Briar Creek. She would have a year to finish high school and grow up and decide what she wanted to do with her life, and if she did really want to be with her soulmate.
